Comments:   I don't understand why Lake Baikal is presented as "fresh". This lake is highly polluted with mercury, celluloid and other metals and toxic substantions. Anyone who is interested, please read http://www.american.edu/ted/BAIKAL.HTM and change your opinion. I would dissuate everyone to visit lake baikal. Other investigations than the one published on the site proved that drinking water of Rhein (in the Netherlands, after all the German factories have polluted this rever) is 10 times better for your health than drinking water from lake Baikal.

Unfortunately, because of a change in the dates we were unable to get to Irkutsk. Your website is wonderful! We had many questions about the city but you answered them all! We still dream about going to Irkutsk someday and, no doubt, we will!

Comments:   I have heard that the lake holds 25% of the Earth's fresh water and that it is the cleanest in the world. Too bad the Russian beaurocrats found it necessary to polute it with a paper mill. The accompanying pictures show a mostly pristine and beautiful place. One would think that if the people in charge promoted tourism on a lager scale, the mill would not be needed.

Comments:   I spent twelve days in Irkutsk and on Lake Baikal in June, 2001. It is a magnificent area to visit; the people are very warm and cultured, the city itself is beautiful and filled with great restaurants, theatres, museums, etc. Baikal is impossible to imagine; one must visit it and spend some time there to really comprehend it's greatness and beauty. I stayed five days at Baikal Dunes Resort, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is in Irkutsk and can find time to go there. The Resort is very private and inexpensive; what a great place to Honeymoon. I plan to return to Irkutsk and Listvianka Village in Summer of 2002. I hope you will be able to visit; it is the experience of a lifetime. The Angara Hotel is the top Hotel for the comfort of Westerners, sixth floor has central air conditioning. It is very hot in Irkutsk in the Summer. The Sun Hotel is also very good, and new, but it is located outside the city and you must take a taxi to get there. From the Angara Hotel, you can walk all over Irkutsk and see many wonderful sites. Don't miss the walkway along the Angara River at night, and the Children's Park. Good Luck and GOD BLESS YOU! Comments:   My name is Eyal Smener. My paternal grandmother Fannia Padkova was born appearently in Irkutsk in 1899 to Abraham Padkov or Padkoff? and Freida Kruter. They were jews that received authorization to open a general merchandise store in Irkutsk from the czar. At that time jews were not allowed to open stores without special authorization from the czar. Is there any archives in the city from that period where I can found their traces?. I know they eventually emigrated to Brazil and then to Argentina and lived and died there. I live in Los Angeles, California. e-mail: smener@pacbell.net

Comments:   wow!!! so many people have been in parts of my country, Irkutsk is historikal city, strongly recomend to visit. The fact is that I grew up in the small city called Angarsks. Iam 25 years of age and my parents still live in Angarsk , wchich is about 45min car ride. Last time I ve been on lake Baikal is 1993, and I miss every part of it. I've been in almost every city in the United States, but I have not seen anything as beautiful as lake Bikal. I grew up on every trail and fishing spot on that part of the Country, its all due to my Father who is great fisherman and hunter. Right now I live in Chicago, United States. I finished four year college, majoring in Marketing and International business. Anyone, if you have any questions or business ideas please email me at akrivokrasov@hotmail.com or call me at 216-577 -3630, Thank you very much.

Transaero-link on train and flight page doesn't work:-(((

I visited last year, and fell in love with the region, so now my shortlist of cities has been narrowed to just one! I'd love to talk to either anyone who has been to Irkutsk to study and could maybe give me a couple of pointers, or to anyone who is planning to go there - maybe we can compare notes. Cheers. Comments:   Greetings I am heading off to the capital of Peter the Great in a week. I'll be there 16-26 June, and then off to Lake Baikal for a week. Anyone else going? I've been to Petersburg twice before, so I know my way around to an extent. Perhaps we can go sightseeing or explore the restaurants and other resources of this rich city. My major interests are music (at least one opera/concert a day!), art and history. I'll be with some American and Russian friends for different portions of the trip, and the Russians will love to show us around (in other words, translate!). I'm heading to Kizhi for a weekend which contains a wonderful architectural museum, including the 22-cupola church. After, I will be in Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude for a week, where I want to attend a Shaman ceremony, see an Old Believers' community, look at the deepest lake in the world, and step foot onto Asia for the first time. Also, take a brief Trans-Siberian journey. Please contact me if you are interested in getting together, or can recommend guides in the Baikal region.
