Guests of WWW Irkutsk during May-October 1997

I enjoy your site so very much. Since I decided to adopt a child from Irkutsk earlier this year, it has been been such a help to be able to "visit" almost daily. Hopefully I will be coming over to pick up my daughter very soon. I am looking forward to visiting as soon as possible.

I greatly enjoyed my opportunity to visit Irkutsk and Lake Baikal with a wonderful group of Russian Scientists. I was part of a group from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. I was greatly impressed with the quantity and quality of the science being done by this talented group. Visiting the Irkutsk Botanic Gardens, and doing field work with botanists from Irkutsk State University, were high points. I have decided to return for another visit so I can spend more time working with the botanists.

I am a student at a business school & am taking a business communication class. Today I gave a speech about Irkutsk & Lake Baikal. I visited Irkutsk last winter, December 27-28 1997. I had a great time & would recommend the trip to anyone. Fortunately I speak Russian & was able to travel extensively in Russia without an interpreter. It must be said that the Russian people are the most HOSPITABLE IN THE WORLD!

In late 1981 I had the distinct pleasure to visit the Soviet Union. My travels took me to Russia (Moscow and Zagorsk) and further north to Leningrad (St. Petersburg). I was warmly received by all those whom I met during my vacation. The immeasurable educational experience will vividly and permanently remain with me the rest of my life. Today I have another pleasure. I am the host for one of two Russians who are visiting from Irkutsk. The visitors are students who will participate in an intern program with my company. Hopefully, they will gain some knowledge about American business and culture that may be helpful as the Region of Irkutsk develops its own business direction. Whatever else is gained I'm sure we can both agree that the world is much smaller and we all must cooperate in a global economy. This type of intern/host program can help make these things happen and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate.

I am an electric engineer working for an electric utility in Eugene, Oregon, USA. Eugene is a Sister City of Irkutsk. I would enjoy corresponding with an engineer working in electric power distribution in Irkutsk. Learning about the facilities on the other side of the world would be facsinating and, maybe, we can find ways to help each other solve problems we both face.

I am so pleased to have discovered your web page. I visited Irkutsk and other parts of Siberia in September, 1993. I enjoyed my visit immensely. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to coverse with students of English at the Foreign Language Institute in Irkutsk. Another great pleasure, and one of the best musical experiences of my life, was a concert at the former Polish Catholic Church in Irkutsk. It was an a capella chorus of mixed voices. The audience consisted of our (American) and a German tour group. We were all electrified by the beauty and precision of the performance. I have regretted not knowing the name of the group. If anyone has information about this I would appreciate knowing about it. The date of the concert was September 13, 1993.

I am building a page on the Polish philosopher and logician Stanislaw Lesniewski (1886-1939) (at the site http://www.fmag.unict.it/polhome.html)who in his youth spent some years in Irkutsk, around 1900. I was seeking for a link to Irkutsk and I met this beautiful site. I know that Lesniewski attended (classical?) high-school there - because his father, an engineer, was working at the construction of Trans-Siberian Railway. I would be grateful to anyone who could give me any information about him in those years.Thank you.

As the former Sister Cities Coordinator for the City of Eugene, I was hoping to find mention of the fact that Eugene is linked with Irkutsk through a special friendship known as a Sister City. A formal document was signed between our respective mayors in 1987 (I believe) and extensive exchanges between our citizens have ensured. The link is one of four Eugene has that are recognized by the National Sister Cities International organization based in Alexandria VA. Eugene's other links include Kakegawa, Japan; Chinju, Korea; and Kathmandu, Nepal.Such diverse areas as art, medicine, business, horticulture and many others I probably am not aware of have been the topics of exchanges. While I never had the pleasure of visiting Irkutsk personally, I was directly involved with receiving delegates and have many memories. I hope other Eugene citizens can benefit from visiting this web page and realizing there is a direct link between the citizens of Eugene and Irkutsk. Congrats on your web site.
